Today the First Baptist Church continues its rich tradition of “soul liberty.” It holds firmly to Roger Williams’ founding principle of separation of church and state. As a downtown church, surrounded by educational and commercial structures, it has no immediate neighborhood, so its diverse membership comes from all over the state.
First Baptist Church in America is a living active congregation which prides itself on the quality of the weekly Sunday services, the music, Christian education, and fellowship. It reaches out to the college student community as well as serves to the needs of the downtown through membership in the Providence Intown Churches Association. The church is affiliated with the American Baptist Churches/USA and the American Baptist Churches of Rhode Island.
