Camp Canonicus Update
Thankfully, what happens at Camp Canonicus, doesn’t stay at Camp Canonicus.
Because of the support of many, we were able to send 19 young people, predominately refugees from the Congo and Eritrea, to Camp Canonicus for a week or more this summer. While at camp, they swam, made lanyards, sang songs, had Bible study, played games and did all those things that we expect to happen at camp. These things give them happy camp memories.
And then there are the more important things that happen at a church camp. They learned to cooperate and work as a team. They were challenged by new opportunities, physically, mentally, and spiritually. They put the needs of others before their own. They became friends with people who had a different point of view. These lessons sink into their hearts and minds and show themselves when they return to their family, school and community.
One young man has already asked to be registered for the leadership program next year. Most of the attendees want to go for more weeks next summer and several youth who didn’t sign up this year, said they are going for sure next summer. It’s a small thing, a week a camp, but it can have a big impact.
Thanks to Deb Guilmain, camp director and her excellent staff for going the extra mile to make sure all the youth who attended Canonicus this summer had an amazing experience. And thank you to everyone who supported this mission.
