Canonicus 2020
This summer we could not send anyone to camp, but the need for time away from the city was great. So we created a weeklong experience for our youth at Canonicus. Through Canonicus Camp and Conference Center, we were able to reserve a large field, the outdoor chapel, and the waterfront for our exclusive use during the week. Pastor Jamie provided a daily morning devotion in the chapel. She was assisted on two days by Pastor Seth from the Alpha and Omega Deaf Church in Providence. Hayley recommended Seth when I asked about learning some songs in sign. Pastor Seth with the assistance of his daughter Christine, not only taught us songs, but he told Bible stories and joined us in conversation and on hikes,
We also hiked, swam, boated, ate and played soccer. A special thank you to Fortunata Kaska Chantal and Riziki Pepe who provided snacks, Linda Bausserman who brought lunch two days, Matthew Casey and Karen Marshall who joined us at camp and to those who donated to help pay the bills. If you have not donated and would like to, it’s not too late. You can mail a check or donate online and indicate on the memo line or in the notes that it is for camp.
Our biggest problem as we planned the week was how to get 18 young people to Exeter every day. The best option was hiring a stretch limo. This led to our next problem, how to pay for a limo. Fortunately, the American Baptist Home Mission Societies is awarding COVID-19 grants and we were able to secure one. That grant paid for our transportation.
It was a good week, but we are all looking forward to next summer when all our youth can attend Canonicus for a week.
