Please Help!
Church World Service is handing out supplies around the world due to hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes and fires. In Cuba following Hurricane Irene, 15,000 prepositioned hygiene kits were distributed and they are working with ACT Alliance to reach 100,000 people through repairing roofs, food security, WASH, livelihood protection and restoration, psychosocial support and the provision of other, non-food supplies. Since Hurricane Harvey, they have disbursed all but 100 emergency clean-up buckets. 900 blankets have been sent to Texas and Florida.
The CWS team in Japan has been responding to flooding caused by unusually heavy July rains in northern Kyushu island. Tragically, 36 people died in the flooding and aftermath. CWS has deployed Program Officer Yukiko Maki to help coordinate this response to unprecedented climate change alongside partners.
There are still two months left in hurricane season. Fires are still raging. The American Baptist Churches of Rhode Island are gathering supplies for hygiene kits. The following items go into each kit:
- One hand towel measuring approximately 15″ x 28″ to 16″ x 32″ (no fingertip, bath, dish towel or micro-fiber)
- One washcloth
- One wide-tooth comb removed from the package
- One fingernail or toenail clipper removed from the package
- One bath-size bar of soap in the wrapper
- One toothbrush in the package
- Ten standard size Band-Aids
All items need to fit inside a one-gallon plastic zipper closure bag. Remove the excess air from the bag and seal before boxing. Do NOT add any extra items or toothpaste. A tube of extended expiration date toothpaste will be added to each hygiene kit just prior to its final journey.
You can drop off completed kits, or items for a kit at the church (75 North Main Street), Wednesday, September 20 – Friday, September 22 between 10 AM and 3 PM or on Sunday morning, September 24. The kits will be dedicated at the ABCORI All Church Worship on Sunday, September 24 at 3 PM at Ebeneezer Baptist Church and then assembled and shipped to CWS by the American Baptist Women’s Ministry of RI.
