Save Lake Adams
Lake Adams at Camp Canonicus is possible because of a dam. This dam creates the lake which is the centerpiece of the camp’s programming. In the fall Matt Black, the Facilities Manager, noticed that there were sink holes developing under the dam. After talking with experts, the staff determined that a major repair project is absolutely necessary to save the dam. The estimated cost will be $500,000 to $600,000. Even though the cost is high, these repairs are a must to maintain our ministries at Canonicus.
The staff has reached out to the Natural Resources Conservation Services, about grants for the projects and the conversations have gone well. Supporting the project with a grant would cover 80% of the cost. That would put our cost at somewhere around $100,000 to $120,000. They are also reaching out to others for potential grants.
You can donate by mailing a check, made out to FBCIA with Canonicus in the memo line, to the church or using the donate button below with Canonicus in the notes field.
Camp Memories from our members
Ken Long
My sister and I were charter campers in 1947 and 1948 when “Baptist Plantations” started. The girls slept in the farmhouse and the boys slept in tents in the lower field. I remember helping to collect stones, rocks and boulders to make the foundation for the new waterfront dining lodge. My siblings and I attended camp every summer when Paul Shaub was the Executive Director until 1957. When Warren Adams became the new Executive Director, I worked on the staff in the kitchen. In 1954, a publication “The Story of Baptist Plantations” was published. My picture appears as a camper standing in the “doorway” of “my” tent in the boy’s village. I have so many very fond memories from those 10 years at camp.

My favorite activities to do at Canonicus are swimming, hiking and sports. Some of my favorite memories involve sitting around the campfire with friends and family. I really enjoy Bible study because we all get to know each other.
Barbara McCurdy
I loved that camp. I went there most every year from age 12 to age 18 when I became a counselor. I remember I was greatly influenced by a testimony that a visiting minister made one evening at chapel. I remember saying that that was the way I wanted to commit my life to Jesus and his principles as this minister did. Canonicus was a great place to look forward to going to each summer. I enjoyed sleeping in the tents we had at that time, the friends that I made and of course swimming in Lake Adams.

I am Shukurani and I am going to be telling my good memories about the camp. What I like is that everyone is kind and loving. I like canoeing in the lake and I like seeing the fish swim under the bridge. I like when we pray and have fun together there. I like eating marshmallows and having fun with Tim.
Christopher Lutke
I love camp. I wish there were more flowers and fishing poles and that the floor of the bridge was glass so that you could see the fish and the turtles.
