Two Garden Tales
Along the wall, in the backyard of the church, is a small vegetable garden. We have broccoli and cauliflower, mostly eaten by rabbits, peppers, tomatoes, squash and beans. This is the third year for the garden and we have not advertised it’s presence, but it’s there for anyone who would like some fresh vegetables.
A couple weeks ago I talked to a landscaper from RISD who asked if we would be growing tomatoes again. I told him we would. He related how he comes over whenever he sees a ripe tomato and picks in and enjoys it on the spot. I’m delighted that he is enjoying our produce.
Last week, I got a phone call asking for food for a woman and her daughter who had fallen on hard times. We have a fund to help those who are struggling so I purchased a grocery store gift card, picked some produce from my garden, and included the one ripe green pepper from the church garden. I am excited that our small garden and can feed the hungry.
If you happen to be walking by the church and notice some ripe vegetables, please pick them and eat them. We don’t mind if you take them home and wash them first. If you see a weed, feel free to pull it. If you’d like to join us in the garden, our next work day is Tuesday, July 24 from 9 – 12.
